From street carts to find dining, tacos have arrived. Part of it is because tacos just make for awesome eating. But they also appeal to a spectrum of tastes.
Lucy Doheny, grande dame of the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills in the first half of the 20th century, likely served fois gras and caviar in the manse’s sumptuous ballrooms and drawing rooms. Today, an equally well heeled a crowd might attend a wedding, corporate event or other party at the Greystone. The difference is that modern guests might dine on tacos instead of tartiflette.
Why the change? For starters, tacos are just so universally popular. This is due in part to the adaptability of tacos to individual tastes. Parties featuring the menu of taco cart caterers generally have food stations that make each taco to order, satisfying the tastes of vegans and carnivores alike. The option to go muy caliente y picante appeals to an increasingly larger population as well. Add fancy fish tacos and a portable margarita bar and there are few if any complaints about the fare.
But taco catering is also welcome at other fine venues in the Los Angeles area. Head out on the Pacific Coast Highway to Adamson House in Malibu for more historic elegance. The wonderful gastronomic experience of a tilapia taco with a sweet salsa goes just right with the Spanish Colonial Revival (combined with Moorish Revival elements) architecture of what was once known as Vaquero Hill. Mobile taco catering comes full circle when the transportable service stations are positioned in the 19th century gardens among the estate’s richly-detailed tile fountains.
Taco-themed menus are not just for corporate events. Weddings are going full taco, sometimes as a means to shift budget dollars to a live band and sometimes just because brides wanna have fun (and grooms do not object). On any given weekend you’ll find brides in white and bridesmaids in every color of the rainbow with their ushers and groomsmen headed to Ruby Street in Highland Park, in the Northeast Los Angeles sector that is increasingly popular with hipsters and young families. A converted church, it’s decorated simply to allow all eyes to focus on the happy couple and one kick-ass stained glass window. The back garden at Ruby Street doubles the available space – enough room for pre-ceremony appetizers and perhaps a courage-inducing margarita.
The list of high-end wedding and corporate party venues is almost endless in LA, even more so with the street taco cart option that turns an outdoor space into a hot food party scene. Anyone planning an event, from mansions to beachfronts, art galleries to industrial loft conversions, should at least consider how a taco party could set the event on the right path. Even Lucy Doheny would approve.
